2013 Standard Bank Artist Mary Sibande teams up with Joburg’s first digital gallery TMRW Gallery in Keyes Art Mile to present her latest solo exhibition A Crescendo of Ecstasy. Meshing the worlds of virtual reality and sculpture, Sibande says of the unique collaboration; “we thought it would be interesting if people were able to step into my head in a way and to experience a virtual or fantastical world that was really an amplified version of the work”.

A Crescendo of Ecstasy joins Sibande’s ongoing series that follows her alter ego, the domestic worker Sophie, an ever-present figure in her works. Taking inspiration from a family lineage of domestic work (both her mother and grandmother were domestic workers), Sibande use her human-scale sculptures of Sophie (which are modelled on herself) to explore issues of gender, class and race within a post-apartheid South Africa. Elaborately dressed in Victorian garb, Sophie's character is seen transgressing the humble boundaries of domestic work in fantastical ways, finding refuge and emancipation in the power of dreams.

In A Crescendo of Ecstasy, Sibande takes inspiration from Sophie's fantasy realm by using digital technologies to transport the viewer into a new world filled with writhing purple vines that foregrounds the complex relationship between reality, fantasy and artistic imagination.
