The Troyeville

A historic favourite on the east side of Joburg that dates back to the 1930s, The Troyeville is known for serving up some of the tastiest Portuguese food in Joburg.

In 2021 this somewhat grungy but always atmospheric destination got new owners who embarked on a major upgrade. With a fresh and bold look, The Troyeville’s ground floor is now home to a Portuguese bakery and coffee shop, called Casa Das Natas. What was formerly The Troyeville Hotel's famed ‘Flamingo Room’ (named because of its shocking-pink flamingo mural, which sadly is no more) is now the place for authentic, and utterly delicious pasteis de nata, made in-house by the Casa Das Natas team.

The Troyeville Restaurant is the hotel's signature restaurant. Open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, it is still hugely popular for lunch over weekends and on special occasions like Mother's Day. We recommend the classic Mozambican king or queen prawns with chips and salad, or the Portuguese salted cod (bacalhau).

The Sports Bar, long a popular pre-match drinking hole for rugby fans visiting the nearby Emirates Airline Park (formally Ellis Park), has been reimagined thanks to a full-length bar, overhead TVs, and a big flatscreen, as well as 20 TV screens dotted around the restaurant itself so that patrons don't miss a second of the action. Even if you're not heading out to watch the rugby at Emirates, The Troyeville is still a go-to venue to catch the big game – with a cold one in hand and truly fantastic views.

For an outdoor gathering, the Pizza, Gin, and Wine Garden with its impressive, wood-fired pizza oven, is a beautiful space where the Joburg skyline views really impress. Just up the stairs, the recently added Glass Room and Deck offers a unique space for events of up to 35 guests.

The biggest new attraction is the formerly unused rooftop which has been transformed into a huge beer garden called the Sunset 1403 Rooftop Bar (aptly named after The Troyeville's location: 1403 Albertina Sisulu Road). This is where you can enjoy the sunset and twinkling city lights over drinks served from the central bar and tasty treats from the menu. The rooftop bar is open from Fri – Sun and doesn't charge an entrance fee. It's also available for private hire from Mon –Thu. Keep an eye on the hotel's website and social media channels for news of upcoming events.

Being a hotel, on the second floor you'll find budget accommodation offering five standard rooms that can sleep between one and two people and suites that can sleep up to four. The rooms are spacious and neat with the biggest boasting a living area, kitchenette, bathroom, and bedroom. When the need arises, this can be used as a smaller meeting space. The hotel constantly strives to enhance guests' experiences and has plans to renovate the rooms soon.

In the past, the hotel had long-stay rooms. This floor has been transformed into The Troyeville Banqueting Hall, a large space for private parties, conferences, or corporate events that can accommodate up to 150 people.

The Troyeville has limited, off-street guarded parking in the back (the main entrance is for drop off and pick up only). To find the secure back entrance, turn into the small lane alongside Portugal Fisheries. Turn left through the boom and park. The back stairs take you directly to the restaurant.
