Constitution Hill presents this historically significant exhibition of artworks created by the late political activist Fatima Meer during the time she was imprisoned at the Women’s Gaol in Constitution Hill. Meer created the works in secret and used them to show the humiliating and degrading conditions in which she and her fellow inmates lived behind the prison's walls.

Fatima Meer was one of the founders of the Federation of South African Women and led the iconic Women’s March of 1956 alongside fellow anti-apartheid struggle icons Lilian Ngoyi and Helen Joseph. Meer was originally banned from taking part in politics in 1952 by the apartheid government and was detained without trial during the 1970s after she tried to organise a political rally with Steve Biko.
