In 1986 Hans Blum was commissioned to buy art for the Weltkulturen museum in Frankfurt. Blum had lived in South Africa from the early 1960s to the late 1970s and had been involved in the anti-apartheid struggle. He bought 600 artworks by only black South African artists, and the collection became a focal piece of the museum’s contemporary art collections.

Twenty-eight years after the collection’s first exhibition in Frankfurt, it returns to South African soil with an intriguing mix of the old and the new in A Labour of Love. Curated by curator and artist Gabi Ngcobo, who also curated the 2016 Berlin Biennale, A Labour of Love re-examines over 150 works from Blum’s collection inspired by the notion of love. The artworks span an array of mediums from prints and sculpture to as yet unpublished archives. The works are accompanied by new works created by renowned artist Sam Nhlengthwa during his residency at the Weltkulturen museum in 2015; and contributions created by four former art students in response to their study of the collection and its history in their final semester.

The catalogue includes new articles by art and history experts and interviews with artists included in the collection such as David Koloane and Lionel Davis. It also includes archives and images of the works from the museum’s collection.

Wed Sep 6 As part of Art Week Joburg the museum hosts a talk led by Hans Blum and a launch party for the exhibition from 18:00.
