In this one-woman play, Maude Sandham tracks the fragments of her family’s history, retelling stories of her grandfather who grew up in pre-apartheid Fordsburg before moving to a neighbourhood of predominantly white railway families in Crosby. Drawn from her personal experiences, this one-woman show is a poignant portrayal of a granddaughter's search for meaning in the unanswered questions and unexplained silences in her grandfather's life.

Alan Sandham was a father of six and was regarded as a tough 'self-made' man who strove to better his family's lot in life. 19 years after Alan passed away his family learnt that he had been hiding a secret his entire life - Alan was in fact a 'coloured' or mixed race South African who had been "living his life in the light" as a white man in order to evade the apartheid regime's oppression of South Africans who were classified as non-white.

In Tracks Sandham uncovers the familiar stories we tell to fill the gaps in the documentation printed in the South African history books and brings to the fore the paralleled personal and national effects of life under the apartheid regime.

This performance takes place as part of Wits Theatre's So Solo festival, a celebration of the one-man show featuring a dozen different South African plays.
