Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral

Designed by Blagoja Mickovski (1931-2002) and Slavko Gjurich (1931-1980) and constructed between 1973 and 1977, this fine example of eccentric Yugoslav raw concrete design replaced the Catholic church of the same name destroyed by the 1963 earthquake where the Mother Teresa Memorial House now stands. Complete with an equally bizarre bell tower and one of the few buildings from the period that genuinely deserves a visit, Mass is usually held in Croatian although they sometimes conduct it in English.
